Veneers Q&A
What are veneers?
Veneers are thin, custom-made shells that bond to the surface of your teeth to change their shape, size, and color. Veneers can be porcelain or composite resin. Both materials match the color of your teeth, so they look as natural as possible, but stain-resistant porcelain is considered the gold standard for bright, white veneers.
Why should I try veneers?
Veneers can completely transform your smile without extensive dental work. You can change the shape of your teeth, brighten the color, and even give the illusion that you have straight, uniform teeth.
You may want to consider veneers if you have:
- Chipped teeth
- Cracked or broken teeth
- Tooth discoloration
- Short teeth
- Misshapen teeth
- Large gaps in teeth
- Misaligned teeth
If you’re unhappy with the appearance of your smile, veneers offer exceptional results that look as natural as possible.
What are the different types of veneers?
Dr. Taylor’s Family Dental Center offers two different types of veneers, depending on your treatments goals, time constraints, and budget:
Porcelain veneers
Porcelain veneers are wafer-thin shells of porcelain that permanently bond to the surface of your teeth. They’re custom-made and stain-resistant so that you can have a beautifully straight, white smile.
Placing veneers is a somewhat lengthy process that takes at least 2-3 visits and involves removing a small portion of your natural enamel. This step helps the veneers look as natural as possible, blending in with the rest of your teeth.
Once the team removes a portion of your enamel, they make impressions of your teeth to create your veneers. Within the next 2-3 weeks, you return to the office, where the team adjusts and cements your veneers in place.
Lumineers
Lumineers are porcelain, semi-permanent veneers that can also be bonded to the surface of your teeth. They require little to no preparation, so the process itself is much shorter than with porcelain veneers.
Because Lumineers aren’t permanent, the team can remove them if you decide you no longer want them. However, they’re thinner than porcelain veneers and more translucent, so Lumineers aren’t an ideal solution if you have severely discolored teeth.
After taking impressions of your teeth, the team sends them off to an outside lab and bonds them to your teeth about 2-4 weeks later.
